But just curious, ... if the Cranky Product Manager was of the male persuasion, would you have referred to her/him as a "man product manager" ??

Hum, most probably not. For some reason, I relate the word "Cranky" to a woman ... That could be because I'm a woman and often hear my loved ones complaining that I'm cranky! 

Sorry, had to jump on this bandwagon - but I've met plenty of cranky men ("man product managers?"). I hardly think that our gender has cornered the market on crankiness. ;-)
